What Is Intense Pulsed Light?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a nonlaser light treatment designed to treat a range of cosmetic concerns. From signs of aging to damaged skin, IPL treatments can provide notable benefits with little to no downtime. We adapt the treatment to each patient, depending on their target focus. This allows us to treat a range of skin concerns, including:
  • Tone and texture issues
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Age spots and sun damage
  • Pigment irregularities
  • Freckles
  • Rosacea
  • Acne

How Does IPL Work?

IPL is a nonablative treatment, meaning it does not vaporize the upper layer of skin as some laser therapies do. This allows for a quicker recovery with less risk of skin irritation. Instead, the treatment works through three main steps.
  • The Pulse: Pulses of broad-spectrum light are emitted from the device and directed at the target areas.
  • The Absorption: Target cells absorb the light, converting it to heat. These bursts of heat can break down pigments or damaged cells while leaving surrounding tissues untouched.
  • The Reaction: The body removes the damaged cells and replaces them with healthy ones while also tightening due to increased collagen production.

What Are the Benefits of IPL?

  • Gentler Treatment: See improvements without putting your skin through more intensive options.
  • Flexible Approach: Different wavelengths can address different concerns.
  • No Downtime: Since no ablation happens, your skin can recover quickly without interrupting your routine.
  • Natural-Looking Outcomes: All the improvements come from your own body. IPL only activates these mechanisms, so your results are 100% you.

FAQs

Is IPL right for me?

Intense pulsed light treatment is ideal for patients who want a more conservative approach to skin concerns. However, since it is gentler, it works best for mild to moderate concerns. Patients with more severe skin issues may want to try an alternative therapy. Your specialist will thoroughly consult with you to ensure IPL is right for you and safe for your skin tone.

How long does the treatment take?

An IPL session can take between 15 and 60 minutes for most patients. It will depend on the area(s) treated. Patients who treat multiple areas in a single visit may need to arrange for a longer session. We will let you know before your treatment what time frame to expect.

When will I see the results?

Your full results will appear within several weeks of treatment. However, it can vary according to the skin regrowth cycle of the treated area. Usually, notable results appear within 1 month, with some continued improvements following that.

Additionally, patients may require more than one session to reach their goals. Mild concerns may be treated with 1 or 2 sessions. But more notable pigmentation concerns or wrinkles may best respond to 3 to 5 sessions. During your consultation, we will provide an outline of how many treatments you may need to see the results you envision.

How long do IPL results last?

Once you complete your regimen, your results should last about 1 year. However, this can vary based on individual health, genetics, and lifestyle factors. For example, excess sun exposure and dehydration can cut short your results. But good skin care and healthy habits can prolong your results.

Is there any recovery period?

Even though IPL is gentler, it still does cause some strain to the skin. However, patients tend to find the recovery period to be mild, brief, and well tolerated. You may have some redness, and your skin may feel similar to having a mild sunburn. While this should not require full downtime, we recommend taking extra care of your skin until it recovers. This includes avoiding irritants, such as certain skin care products (e.g., retinoids, scrubs), and staying out of direct sunlight. Also, avoid strenuous physical activity until any redness or swelling fades. Mild activity, like walking, can help promote blood flow and facilitate recovery.

Is IPL safe?

IPL is generally considered very safe when performed by an experienced, qualified specialist. We take extra care for patients with darker skin tones to avoid the risk of causing pigmentation issues. In some cases, we may recommend an alternative system that is safer for all skin types.
